Luis Fonsi

Biografía

Luis Fonsi is a multi-platinum-selling recording artist, actor, and television host. Initially molded as a singer of romantic ballads with dramatic flair over sweeping string arrangements, he has enjoyed great success in that role, but it hardly encompasses his vast range of talents. Since releasing 1998´s Comenzaré, the majority of his albums and singles have charted; these include 2006´s breakthrough Paso a Paso and 2009´s Palabras del Silencio, which both went to number one and spent multiple weeks on the charts. In January 2017, "Despacito" featuring was released; its video attained five billion views. 2019´s Vida also landed inside the Top Five globally. In 2020, Fonsi continued releasing hit singles including "Imposible" with , and joined , , and as coaches on the first Spanish season of La Voz on Telemundo. In 2021, he teamed with singer on the smash "Vamos a Marte." In February 2022, Fonsi and issued the party anthem "Vacaciones," heralding his 11th Top Ten Latin Pop Album, 2023´s Ley de Gravedad. He kicked off 2024 with the single "Santiago." Born in Puerto Rico and raised in Orlando, Florida, Fonsi dove into show business at a young age, singing in a school vocal group called the Big Guys that also included future star Joey Fatone. Following high school, Fonsi studied singing at Florida State University and scored a contract offer from . He debuted on in 1998 with Comenzare, which did well, peaking at number 27 on Billboard´s Top Latin Albums chart and spawning four hit singles: "Si Tu Quisieras," "Perdóname," "Dime Como," and "Me Iré." His follow-up album, Eterno, released in 2000, did even better, peaking at number six on the Top Latin Albums chart and spawning another four hit singles, among them the chart-topping "Imaginame Sin Ti." And so it went for the next few years, with more releases and more commercial success. Amor Secreto topped the Latin album chart in 2002 and Abrazar la Vida came close in 2003, both of them carried by numerous hits. The only mishap for Fonsi during this remarkable run was an English-language crossover attempt, Fight the Feeling, that came and went very quickly in 2002, a clear miscalculation. When the time came for Fonsi to record his sixth LP, to be released in 2005, he went out on a limb, recruiting producer Sebastian Krys, who had previously worked with the likes of , , and JD Natasha. The resulting album, Paso a Paso, was still a Latin pop excursion through and through, but in general it featured guitars in the forefront rather than sweeping strings. The record also explored different kinds of rhythms and arrangements, resulting in Fonsi´s most distinct and creative album to date. Critics, who hadn´t always been kind to Fonsi, were mostly positive and liked what they heard. Moreover, and more importantly, the public loved the lead single "Nada Es Para Siempre," and lined up in droves to buy the album when it was released in late summer. Paso a Paso debuted at number two on the Top Latin Albums chart, setting up yet another great run for Fonsi, who now found himself more aligned with successful yet inventive Latin stars like than the generic balladeers he had previously kept company with. Fonsi´s 2008 effort Palabras del Silencio was essentially a continuation of all that he had accomplished with Paso a Paso, with the singer co-writing all of the 13 songs. The album earned double-platinum status in the U.S. and Venezuela, along with gold status in Spain, Mexico, Colombia, and Central America. Featuring the hit single "Gritar," the record Tierra Firme followed in 2011. Three years later, Fonsi returned with his eighth album, appropriately titled 8, and followed it with a lengthy tour. In a stylistic turn, Fonsi collaborated with Puerto Rican rapper/singer on the reggaeton-influenced single "Despacito," which topped the charts upon its January 2017 release and remained there for nearly six months. The tune also won Latin Grammys for both Record of the Year and Song of the Year. Its remix (which also featured ) won the award for Best Urban Fusion/Performance. At the Anglo Grammys, it was nominated as Record of the Year and Best Pop Duo/Group Performance for the 2018 awards, while the original version earned a nomination for Song of the Year. 2018 also saw the release of a flurry of high-profile singles, including "Echame La Culpa" featuring , "Calypso" featuring , and "Imposible" featuring . Those tracks were included on Fonsi´s tenth studio LP, Vida, which was issued in early 2019. Also featured on the album were the original mix of "Despacito" (as well as the remix) and another version of "Calypso" with . Vida cracked the Top 20 of the Billboard 200 and topped the Latin charts. In May 2020, Fonsi released the track "Sway" as part of the NBC songwriting competition show Songland. He also teamed with on the single "The World Can Wait," and an EP of remixes. Two months later, he issued "Perfecta" featuring . He finished the year by appearing live with in a medley of "Despacito" and "Echame la Culpa." Fonsi kicked off 2021 with the collaborative single "Por Isso Que Eu Bebo," leading a vocal quartet that included and Thyy; it charted at streaming. Fonsi followed with "Vacío" in duet with urbano star . Landing well inside the Latin Top 20, it spent 16 weeks on the charts. After releasing the tropical dance anthem "Bésame" with and the steamy romantica dance single "Dos Veces" with , Fonsi re-teamed with for the smash "Vamos a Marte"; it placed on no less than half a dozen global charts and went to number two in her home country of Germany. It also inspired an EP of club remixes. In addition, he appeared on ´s trap ballad "Yo No Te Olvido." He completed the year with the solo "Nuestra Balada." Fonsi appeared with , , and Juliette on ´s charting "Un Ratito" in January 2022. He followed it with another collaboration, this time with on the hit spring break party anthem "Vacaciones." In early March, returned the favor and joined Fonsi on his streaming hit "Ley de Gravedad," which also served as the title track to his full-length Ley de Gravedad. Released that March, the album featured many of the previously released singles, including "Vacio" and "Besame," and became his 11th album to hit the Top Ten on Billboard´s Latin Pop Albums. The song "Santiago" arrived in January 2024 as the first single off his 12th studio album. ~ Jason Birchmeier & Thom Jurek, Rovi
